After configuring a HomeKit router, you will have to reinstall all the devices connected to the Home app

The HomeKit support of routers makes it possible to strengthen home automation devices by ” controlling the services and devices with which they communicate on your home Wi-Fi network and on the Internet Says Apple. A new panel Wi-Fi network and routers is available in the Home application (tab Home, then touch the house icon, then settings).

Connecting home automation devices connected to the Wi-Fi network via the HomeKit router has three levels of security:

  • Limit to Home : the most secure setting. Accessory interactions are limited to HomeKit via Apple devices. With this option activated, the accessory does not connect to the Internet or any local device; third-party services (firmware updates, for example) may be blocked.
  • Automatic : security by default. The accessory communicates with HomeKit and the manufacturer’s recommended connections.
  • No restrictions : the least secure. This setting ” bypasses the secure router ”, Which allows the device to interact without constraints with all the network devices and internet services.

But before you can manage your network of connected products in the Home app, you must first connect all the small bazaar, namely the compatible router, an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with the latest version of iOS, as well than a hub (Apple TV, HomePod, iPad). So far so good. You then need to download the iOS app from the router and add the router to the Home app through it. The configuration then takes place in the Home app.

Then, there is the rub: Apple warns that after the configuration of the HomeKit router, it is necessary to remove from the Home app the associated accessories connected by Wi-Fi (Bluetooth accessories are not affected), reset them and then add them again to the Home application to benefit from the secure functions of the HomeKit router!

In other words, it will be necessary to rework all the installation of the different bulbs, thermostats, blinds and other devices connected by Wi-Fi after installation of the secure router. It can possibly be understood from the configuration point of view, but for those who have set up a large home automation system at home, it will be better to have a few hours in front of you … Unless Apple soon offers a backup and restoration tool HomeKit configurations, but we haven’t heard of that.
