Journalist Maikel Coomans of the regional broadcaster has raised more than 35,000 euros with a fundraising campaign. This is enough to carry and decorate the Christmas tree.
Council has given Coomans 24 hours to raise enough funds. He was given only one day, because then the Christmas tree could go with the same transport as that of the tree that will be placed on the Coolsingel. Coomans accepted the challenge. Half of the amount had already been received on Sunday afternoon.
Coomans has received donations from, among others, the Port Authority, Club 25, Ahoy, Breman Woningbeheer and the municipality of Rotterdam. The fundraiser is still open. All extra money will go to Sophia Children’s Hospital.
The huge Christmas tree comes from Norway and is about 18 meters tall. The tree will be unveiled on 10 December at the Stationsplein.
