Vienna Vikings at Istanbul Rams
Saturday June 25 | 15:00 kick-off (CET)

*Vienna Vikings travel to Istanbul undefeated
*Turkish franchise costs Vienna as a home opener
*Vienna Vikings lose Shooting Star Bierbaumer to knee injury

With a 3-0 record and first place in the Central Conference, the Vienna Vikings travel to Istanbul on Saturday. In Week 4 of the European League of Football (ELF), head coach Chris Calaycay’s team hosts the Istanbul Rams (0-3), who celebrate their home opener with this game. So what awaits the Viennese in the stadium in Istanbul is a big unknown. “We heard the local fans will be there in large numbers and loud. The first home game is always exciting. But we mustn’t let ourselves be disturbed and have to concentrate on ourselves,” said Coach Calaycay, looking forward to the away game.

Vienna’s linebacker Thomas Schnurrer is already one of the best defense players in the European League of Football.

It hurts that he has to do without one of his shooting stars in terms of personnel: “Losing a player for the whole season due to injury hurts. With a player like Florian Bierbaumer it is of course particularly difficult. Flo’s ambition was to become one of the most dominant receivers in the league. And I think he did that very impressively in just three games. It is good that the nature of his injury does not require surgery. He will soon cause a sensation again. Come back stronger Flo! Best wishes on behalf of the entire franchise.”

Official Watch Party im Vienna Marriott Hotel

The trip to Istanbul will be intense for the Vikings. It starts in the early hours of the morning from Vienna Schwechat, after arrival in Istanbul by bus directly to the stadium, where lunch is waiting before the pre-game routine begins. The kickoff will take place at 4 p.m. local time (3 p.m. CET). The game can be followed via the European league of Football Game Pass with either English or German commentary. As with every away game of the Viennese franchise, there is an Official Watch Party at the Vienna Marriott Hotel with typical American football dishes and special goodies such as a prize draw.

Personelles Update

Defensive end Marvin Wappl is fresh in the Vienna Franchise squad. The Viennese has played in the Viking club program for many years. Now he’s supposed to put pressure on the line alongside Balogh, Siegel, Müllner & Co.

It is also pleasing that the Swedish offensive lineman Niklas Johansson should be ready for action again. The training sessions of the week so far have gone well. In any case, the Scandinavian can hardly wait for his first assignment. The US import Blake Nelson could also see his first stint in Istanbul. The lightning-fast defensive player (LB/DE) was put on the active roster from the injury reserved list last week.

Wroclaw Panthers visiting Vienna in Week 5 of the ELF

The strong Polish franchise will be making a guest appearance in Vienna next week. The Panthers are in their second season in the European League of Football. In 2021 things went very well for the Breslau team, only in the playoff did they have to admit defeat to the eventual finalists, Hamburg Sea Devils, after an exciting game and an unbelievable fight for every yard.

The Austro-Polish matchup is also the Vikings’ benefit game, where a large part of the net proceeds goes to light into the dark. As in 2021, VELO has taken over the patronage for the Charity Bowl XXIV.
