African Union Pulls Off AstraZeneca COVID Vaccine

African Union refuses to purchase AstraZeneca vaccine

The African regulator expects to replace the drug with an analogue from Johnson & Johnson.

The African Union no longer plans to purchase COVID vaccine from AstraZeneca from the Serum Institute of India. This was stated by the director of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) John Nkengasong, informs Reuters Thursday 8 April.

According to him, the possibility of replacing the supply of the AstraZeneca vaccine with a drug from the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical group is currently being studied. However, the supply of AstraZeneca vaccine to African countries from the Serum Institute of India will continue through the COVAX program.

At the same time, the African Union is purchasing its own vaccine. Now in the portfolio of the organization there are contracts for 670 million doses of vaccine for 55 countries of the union. Johnson & Johnson accounts for 220 million doses with an opportunity to purchase another 180 million. While the main vaccine, the supply of which has been agreed by the African Union, is AstraZeneca, but even more of this vaccine goes to Africa through the COVAX mechanism.

With the help of COVAX in 2021, it will be possible to vaccinate about 20% of the African population. African leaders have set a goal to achieve vaccination by the end of this year for 60% of the continent’s population – almost 780 million people.

Let us remind you that in March Pfizer COVID Vaccination Starts in Africa… The first country in Africa to launch a Pfizer vaccination campaign was Rwanda. They want to vaccinate every third inhabitant by the end of the year.

It was also reported that in Africa revealed another strain of coronavirus… A new variant of the infection was first recorded in Tanzanian citizens who came to Angola. It already gives cause for concern.
