Africa Delivers Champions as Regional Powerhouses March Towards London 2026

Nigeria’s women’s table tennis team has successfully defended its title, achieving a flawless run in the recent tournament.The team’s performance has energized supporters and highlighted Nigeria’s consistent strength in African table tennis.

In individual competitions held in lagos, Kuti and Ajoke Ojomu secured the singles titles. Meanwhile, Luke Abrahams and Patel emerged victorious in the singles events in Windhoek.

Continental Championships Qualifiers

These regional championships served as crucial qualifying events for the African Championships, scheduled to take place from October 12-19 in Kigali, Rwanda. The performances across both tournaments indicate a rising standard of competition on the continent. Ferdinand Sounou, Vice President of ITTF Africa West Region, commended the organizational quality and the improved level of play.

“This year’s tournament in Lagos was a resounding success,” Sounou stated. “The quality of organisation and the elevated standard of play were impressive.Compared to previous editions, which were often dominated by a few countries, this year showed remarkable advancement across the board.”

Path to the World Championships

The regional qualifiers are a significant step for African teams on their journey to the London 2026 World Championships. The strong showings from South Africa and Nigeria, along with competitive performances from Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, and other regional contenders, suggest that Africa will bring considerable depth to the Kigali championships.

As the centenary World Championships approach, these regional champions have taken the initial vital steps toward competing in London, the city where the first World Championships were held 100 years ago.
