Afraid that Candy Crush will be monopolized, US and European KPPU intervene

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is said to be blocking Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Bilzzard. In the near future, the FTC will sue both companies in court.

Microsoft recently announced the acquisition of a game developer and publisher, Activision Blizzard, in a deal worth $69 billion. This deal is the largest acquisition in the gaming industry.

According to Politic, The FTC is preparing an antitrust lawsuit to halt the acquisition process, according to sources.

So far, the four FTC commissioners have yet to vote on the proposed lawsuit. The commissioners also did not meet with legal representatives from Microsoft and Activision.

“We are committed to continuing to work with regulators around the world to complete this agreement, but we will not hesitate to fight back,” said an Activision spokesperson.

According to Activision, the view that the acquisition created an anti-competitive situation is “absolutely absurd.”

Microsoft is the manufacturer of the Xbox game console. Meanwhile, Activision is the owner of popular games like call of Duty And Candy Crush. According to Reuters, This acquisition is Microsoft’s attempt to compete with the gaming industry leader mobile Tencent and Sony, the main competitors in the console gaming industry.

Outside the United States, the European Union has launched an investigation into Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision. European authorities said the results of an investigation would be announced in March 2023, including a decision on whether or not to clear the deal.

British anti-monopoly authorities have also launched an investigation. According to them, the acquisition could harm competition among the firms if Microsoft refuses to grant access to Activision’s games to competitors.

Sony, the maker of the Playstation, has long protested the takeover by Microsoft call of Duty as an example.
