Afghanistan: civilian casualties rising

Since the Taliban negotiated peace with the government in Kabul, violence in Afghanistan has increased. The insurgents do not seem interested in a compromise. But they don’t want to provoke their most dangerous opponent, the USA.

A third of the civilian casualties the war in Afghanistan claimed last year were children.

Almost a year ago, the US and the Taliban signed an agreement in Doha that was supposed to bring peace to Afghanistan. The Americans promised to withdraw the remaining troops in the country by May 2021. In return, the insurgents promised not to give refuge to terrorist groups such as Qaeda and ISIS and to start negotiations with the government in Kabul. These “intra-Afghan” talks began in September, but they are making little progress. To this day, the Taliban still reject a ceasefire demanded by the government.
