Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline, experienced an information system failure on Monday morning, leading to widespread flight disruptions. Teh company has not disclosed the cause or the estimated time for resolution.
The incident has resulted in the cancellation of at least 42 flights to and from sheremetyevo Airport. Passengers were reportedly asked to leave the airport, with Aeroflot promising ticket refunds within 10 days. The airline also stated that ticket reissuance and immediate refunds at the airport checkout were temporarily unavailable.
This disruption follows a series of aviation system failures across Russian airports since early May, attributed to threats of drone attacks. these incidents have caused mass cancellations and delays, with notable periods of disruption occurring on July 5-7, June 6, June 10, and July 19-22.
According to the Russian Travel Operator Association, these aviation crises as May have led to over 1,000 flight cancellations and the diversion of more than 400 aircraft to choice airports. The disruptions have impacted an estimated 200,000 passengers, representing one in ten air travelers in Russia.
In 2024, the Aeroflot Group handled 42.3% of all air transport services in Russia, operating a network of 342 regular routes. The recent mass cancellations have affected the airline’s operations, contributing to a 3.7% decrease in its flight schedule.
Earlier reports indicate that the hacking group Silent Crow breached Rostelekom and Rosrejestr, subsequently publishing personal data of Russian citizens online. The article does not explicitly link these cyberattacks to the Aeroflot system failure, but notes that organizations are “unable to protect the main infrastructure.”
