Advertising boycott: Facebook defends accusations of profiting from hatred

Facing a large advertising boycott campaign ” because of his inability to moderate racist, sexist and otherwise objectionable content ”Facebook posted an open letter on Wednesday saying it did not benefit from hate content.

In this sense, the Vice President of Global Affairs and Communications for the company, Nick Clegg, assured: “I want to be unambiguous: Facebook does not profit from hatred”.

And to emphasize that “Billions of people use Facebook and Instagram because they have good experiences – they don’t want to see hate content, our advertisers don’t want to see it, and we don’t want to see it. There is no point in us doing anything but deleting it ”.

According to the official, more than 100 billion messages are sent every day on the company’s platforms, which makes it difficult to capture all the content that violates its policies.

“Unfortunately, zero tolerance does not mean zero incidence. With so much content published every day, rooting out hatred is like looking for a needle in a haystack ”, he added.

The publication of this open letter comes as more than 400 brands have announced the suspension of their advertising on Facebook and Instagram.
