Jakarta

The government is trying to address the access gap internet in Indonesia by utilizing Starlink. It is just, Starlink internet prices fairly expensive.

In a meeting at Tesla headquarters, United States, last August, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan request Elon Musk to deploy Starlink to Indonesia.

Starlink which is a satellite low earth orbit (LEO) is considered suitable for providing internet access in Indonesia, which is an archipelagic country. Satellite-based internet services can also be a solution when deploying telecommunications infrastructure on land is difficult.

“We also discussed Elon’s interest in collaborating to build a network cheap internet in eastern Indonesia via the popular Starlink satellite,” said Luhut in a recent post on his Instagram account.

“I said that the benefits would arise if Starlink operating in Indonesia is very large, for example; “health infrastructure such as internet access in remote area health centers can help health workers report health facility data in real time,” said Luhut

Previously, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin has asked Elon Musk to provide internet access for health centers in remote, frontier and outermost areas (3T). The meeting is still in exploratory form.

It is not yet known for certain whether the government’s exploration of Starlink is only limited to serving public service facilities or also providing internet services like existing operators.

Talking about Starlink internet prices, Telkom, through Telkomsat, which has collaborated with Starlink, revealed that Starlink rates are expensive.

Cooperation Starlink and Telkomsat were established after the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) grants Special Anchorage Rights Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) to Telkomsat in June 2022.

“So, Starlink has the highest price, then there is IndiHome for example at home, then cellular. It depends on the person who chooses it. Now let’s say, Miss, one person and her parents at home, is it economical to subscribe to Starlink for IDR 2-3 million a month, isn’t it worth it? “That’s the only choice,” said Bogi.
