Additional compensation for the Flames

The Calgary Flames will get their hands on a third-round pick in 2020 or 2021, due to a change in the terms of the trade between James Neal and Milan Lucic from the National Hockey League (NHL).

For Calgary to get their hands on the pick from the Edmonton Oilers, Neal had to score at least 21 goals and at least 10 more than Lucic in 2019-20. When the regular season was shut down in March, he had found the back of the net 19 times, while his rival had found it 8 times.

However, the NHL has decided to change its terms since the campaign was cut short, the Flames announced on Friday. The Alberta organization will now have until the third round of the next draft to choose the year of their new selection.

Conditions for Vatanen and Campbell

The number of games defenseman Sami Vatanen plays in the playoffs could also force the Carolina Hurricanes to hand over a pick to the New Jersey Devils. The Finn was acquired at the trade deadline against two players and a conditional fourth round pick.

If Vatanen plays fewer than two qualifying round games against the New York Rangers, the Devils will receive no draft pick. The full-back will absolutely have to play in 70% of the playoffs, if the “Canes” win against the Rangers, for the Devils to get their hands on a third round pick. If he appears in at least two matches, but less than 70%, then he will become a fourth round pick.

In the case of goaltender Jack Campbell, who was traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the Toronto Maple Leafs along with Kyle Clifford, the conditions are simpler.

The Leafs will owe the Kings a 2021 second-round pick if they win their qualifying round against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Campbell wins two or more games. The other option would be for Clifford to sign a new contract with the team for the next season.

If any of these conditions are not met, the Maple Leafs will only need a third-round selection in 2021.
