“Two years ago, I had a weird, super rare form of vasculitis that left me with vision, hearing, and all of my balance,” the actor said, adding that it took him about a year to get everything back to normal. “I’m lucky to be alive. You don’t really appreciate things until you lose them. At the time, I thought I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to hear, see or walk again,” Kutcher told the show’s host Bear Grylls.

The American actor sees the experience as an opportunity for growth. He thinks that the moment people start seeing obstacles as things that are created for them to give them what they need, they will start enjoying life. “You start surfing your problems instead of living under them,” Kutcher recounted.

Vascular inflammation

Vasculitis is an autoimmune disease that has different variations. It can cause inflammation of blood vessels, and in some cases even damage to organs and tissues. National Institute of Health describes that the disease occurs when the immune system attacks the veins, arteries and small capillaries. Inflammation then narrows the blood vessels and limits blood flow. Interruption of flow can then cause a bulge in the wall of the vessel, which, if ruptured, can even cause internal bleeding and lead to death.

Common symptoms include loss of appetite, fatigue, rash, fever and weight loss. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation. In milder cases, over-the-counter pain relievers can help, but in more severe cases, the doctor must prescribe stronger drugs or steroids. CNN reports that actor and director Harold Ramis, known for the Ghostbusters comedy, died in 2014 of complications caused by vasculitis.

Twin with cerebral palsy

Kutcher’s acting career began during the filming of the Golden Seventies series, and his film debut was the romantic comedy Soon to Come.
