Activist Jaka Bizij: Alexei Navalny will survive the poison attack

The oppositionist Alexei Navalny will survive the “poison attack”, but will not be able to act as a politician for months, Jaka Bizij, founder of the Cinema for Peace foundation, which sent a medical plane to pick up Navalny, told the German newspaper “Bild”. The opposition’s associates believe that an attempt was made to poison him.

“If he manages to survive this and is in good shape, as we all hope, then he will undoubtedly be out of the political arena for at least 1-2 months,” Bizij said. He added that Navalny endured the flight from Omsk to Berlin well, but this does not change his “disturbing general situation”. It was the Bizij Foundation that sent a medical plane equipped with apparatus for transporting patients to Omsk, located in Siberia, to get Navalny.

Transported to Germany

Alexei Navalny, 44, one of the most important Russian opposition activists and a leading critic of the Kremlin’s policy, was hospitalized on Thursday in Omsk, Siberia. He felt unwell on a plane flying from Tomsk to Moscow and lost consciousness. The plane crashed into Omsk. Initially, doctors from the hospital in Omsk did not agree to transport Navalny abroad, explaining that with his condition. They assured that the patient would be treated on the spot, but on Friday evening they changed their mind.

On Saturday, Navalny, who was put into a pharmacological coma, was taken by medical plane to Berlin’s Charite hospital. A spokeswoman for the hospital said he would undergo extensive testing, but declined to know about his condition. On Sunday, Navalny was visited by his wife Julia and one of his associates, Leonid Volkov. They did not talk to journalists.
