Activist Greta Thunberg shields name as a trademark – News

To shield both denominations from possible use by third parties, through the foundation “Stiftelsen Greta Thunberg and Beata Ernman”, the activist formalized the request on 23 December 2019, before the EU Intellectual Property Institute (EUIPO) , headquartered in Alicante, Spain, and which is in charge of protecting the brand, design and model in the European market.

Herself published days ago on her Instagram profile that she made the decision because there were people who were constantly using the brand for commercial purposes, without any kind of consent.

Once the application was published by EUIPO, the Community agency opened a deadline for appeals against affected hypotheticals before, within the estimated period of three months, the marks requested in favor of Thunberg were officially registered.

In the application, the foundation named after the activist and her sister, Beata, requests a reservation for use in advertising, insurance, financial and monetary operations and real estate business.

It also covers the sector of education and training, entertainment and sports and cultural activities, in addition to scientific, technological and industrial design goods, mainly.

The request includes the protection of the figurative image of Greta Thunberg, where the name appears under a heart that resembles a terrestrial globe.

The Swedish activist’s petition was one of more than 160,000 received in 2019 by the agency installed in Alicante for the registration of the Community trademark, which grants the owner protection in the market of the 27 EU countries.
