Activision: CoD Warzone and Cold War may no longer fit on PS4 with 500GB – Gaming – News

Partly the constant growth of the polygons, quality, and size of all data together.

But also a large part because for years they can get away with no longer optimizing the file sizes because with large HDDs / SSDs it is possible that you can write up to 150GB without causing problems.

In the past, when everything was still on CDs and DVDs and you couldn’t assume that your customer had at least a 100mbit download, you just had to get everything on the disc, it couldn’t be doubled with a day1 patch because replacing 1 texture has also become the replacement of all textures.

Patches were often mere MBs, in the worst case you would have one of hundreds of MBs in between, but this mainly happened on PC and not on console.

Then there was high speed internet and bluray + consoles with large storage capacity. And then it no longer became interesting for developers to wrap things up with all kinds of tricks. Takes time, makes the game just a little slower to load, and there’s so much space available, why bother.

And now it is so over the top (especially because many games now come with 4K textures, on disc whether or not as an update that you can immediately share upon first startup) that you will have to install 500GB + games on your disc because no one at Activision knows how to efficiently compress files to save space … No, let’s force gamers to throw an upgrade into their system!

Has all gone pretty crazy.
