According to an Apple executive, Samsung was constantly copying iPhones

The first iPhone was 15 years old recently, and on the occasion the The Wall Street Journal made a short documentary that covers this decade and a half. Several high-ranking people at Apple were contacted, from whom we can get some insight into the initial rivalry between the apple company and Samsung.

Previous legal battles between Apple and Samsung over patent infringement ended in an out-of-court settlement, the details of which are not public. On the other hand, it is clear that the Apple company is still convinced that Samsung copied from them on many occasions, practically stole their technologies.

The first iPhone was introduced on June 27, 2007, and there is no doubt that it was a groundbreaking device that reshaped the mobile market. This is what the The Wall Street Journal his recently published video, in which, among others, Tony Fadell, one of the creators of the iPhone, and Greg Joswiak, Apple’s head of marketing, also speak.

In one of the segments, they talk about how Android manufacturers, especially Samsung, have gained space for ever-larger displays, and how this has affected Apple. To this, Joswiak brought up how annoying it was when Samsung copied them. According to him they stole their technologies and launched weak copies with enlarged display size.

“OK [a Samsung]they were annoying,” he said, adding, “And they were annoying because, as you know, they stretched our technology. They took the innovations we created and made a poor copy of it, just put a bigger screen on it. So yeah, we weren’t too happy.”

The basic form of early Android phones (touch screen + front panel button) really drew a lot from the iPhone, but at the same time, Apple also followed the trends in many things later on, and they learned a lot of innovations from companies like Samsung. The already mentioned large displays are just one example among many, but we could also mention the AMOLED technology or the omission of front panel buttons (Samsung also did this earlier with the Galaxy S8 mobile phones).
