Goodlander Leads Bipartisan Call for Action on Affordable Care Act Funding Amidst Shutdown
Concord, N.H. – Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander spearheaded a bipartisan effort, joined by 143 colleagues including Congressman Chris Pappas (NH-01), to urge Speaker Mike Johnson to immediately reconvene the House of representatives and address the impending expiration of Affordable Care Act (ACA) Enhanced premium Tax Credits. A letter delivered to Speaker Johnson emphasizes the urgency of the situation as the federal government shutdown continues into its second week.
The lawmakers warn that delaying action until the December 31st expiration date of the credits is insufficient. Open enrollment for ACA marketplaces begins November 1st, and many Americans are already receiving notices of meaningful premium increases. Insurers filed rates in mid-August based on the potential loss of these credits, meaning families are facing the prospect of unaffordable health insurance now.
“The ongoing government shutdown and the SpeakerS decision to postpone votes directly threaten the healthcare access of over 24 million Americans,” the letter states. “To claim Congress has until the end of the year ignores the reality facing families currently navigating open enrollment and receiving premium increase notifications.”
the bipartisan group implores Speaker Johnson to prioritize negotiations with Democrats and secure a permanent extension of the ACA’s Enhanced Premium Tax Credits, preventing millions from losing health coverage due to cost.
