Abundant snow at high altitude:
the Spluga and the Stelvio are closed

Anas has decided to ban transit to Switzerland – A decision that could anticipate the winter one

Closed as a precaution, hoping that we can wait a few more weeks for the winter one. Since yesterday the Spluga pass is off limits. This was announced by Anas and for the moment it is a closure linked only to the snow that fell, quite abundant, during the day yesterday at high altitude.

The Stelvio is also closed due to snow. One naturally thinks of the good fortune that the Giro riders had to pass through it only four days ago, with the sun.

Given the now advanced autumn season, the non-passable pass is now mainly used for the movements of Valchiavennaschi workers who move weekly for work to Ticino, even if a minimum load of tourist traffic in recent weeks has still been present. For the former, the obligatory passage, until the reopening, will be that of the Como lake road, across the Porlezza border.

For tourists heading towards Valchiavenna or returning to central Europe, the passage can take place through the Maloja pass, along the Statale 37. Last year the Spluga pass was closed in November, coinciding with a very intense snowfall. An update on the state of the road is announced by the cantonal authorities of Graubünden for the morning of today, around 11 am.

Finally, there are no problems with transit on the Maloja pass, even if yesterday the snow fell in the section between the pass and Sankt Moritz. For all the obligation to install chains.
