Abinader defines policy on Haitian migration

President Luis Abinader warned last night that Haitians who come to the Dominican Republic will have to do so with a work permit and once they finish, they will have to return to their country.

During an interview with CNN en Español journalist Camilo Egaña, Abinader said that he will collaborate with the Haitian authorities to address border issues such as smuggling and illegal trafficking of Haitians.

“Here what we have to do is comply with the law, Haitians who come to the Dominican Republic have to come with a work permit and comply with the law, after they finish that job they have to return to their country. What we are going to do is comply with the law, the immigration law, as any country complies with it, as the United States complies with it, as any organized society complies with it, ”he said.

The president, when asked about what his government will do with Haitian nationals, said that his government commitment is with the Dominicans and his plan is to enforce the law and work together as countries that share the same islands.

The president added that he also has plans to show solidarity and work to help Haiti, since it is a nation that has had many complications historically speaking.

The Venezuelans

Regarding the Venezuelans in the country, Abinader said that they will be able to work until the situation changes since the people of Venezuela have been in solidarity with the Dominicans, so it has to be with them.

United States Partner

Regarding the United States, the president reiterated that the foreign policy that the Dominican Republic maintains with the United States is special because that country is the largest commercial partner of the Caribbean nation, so it will maintain economic relations and the defense of democracy in the region.
