Åberg Credits Ryder Cup Performance as Career Catalyst, Eyes Bethpage Challenge
FARMINGDALE, NY – Ludvig Åberg pinpointed his breakout performance at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome as the pivotal moment that launched his professional golf career, recalling the experience as “overwhelming” and a proving ground for future success. The Swede, currently competing at Bethpage Black ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup, says the pressure of that event prepared him for any stage.
Åberg and teammate Viktor Hovland formed a dominant radar pair in Rome, beginning with a 4 and 3 victory over Max Homa and Brian Harman. They followed that with a stunning defeat of world number one scottie Scheffler and five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, achieving the largest victory margin in Ryder Cup history – nine up with seven holes remaining.
“I remember that before Augusta I thought that if you can perform in Rome during that press, then you can perform anywhere,” Åberg said. “It became a turning point that kicked off my career.”
Dubbed “The Stud” (stallion) and likened to the Barbie character Ken during his extraordinary run, Åberg’s confidence has been bolstered by recent success, including a win at The genesis Invitational in February. Despite a challenging season following that victory, he remains optimistic.
“I would have liked to be in a much better place.I know what’s wrong but when you play tournaments you can’t take four months off to train on the swing,” Åberg explained. ”But I won almost a major and it gives me confidence. That even when I feel the worst, I can join and beat the best players in the world.”
Åberg anticipates a opposed atmosphere at Bethpage Black, known for its passionate - and sometimes critical – golf audience. He embraces the challenge, comparing it to a rivalry game.
“I know they will say ugly things, but that’s part of the sport. If Liverpool goes to Old Trafford (in Manchester), they will not applaud when scoring. It will be more tough than in Rome, but I like when it’s hard. It’s mostly fun,” Åberg stated.
