“The device made it possible this morning to find the mother in a hotel in the city of Nantes, the concern is extremely great because the child has not yet been found,” announced Sunday the prosecutor of Angers , Eric Bouillard, at a press conference. The mother was placed in police custody for “removal of a minor by ascendant”.
Nathalie Stéphan, 39, first showed herself to be “mutant, then pointed out places where she could have left her daughter in Angers, in particular with a friend whose name and very precise address are unknown, which means that the police go door to door, “said Bouillard, adding that the mother was” being driven by car to Angers “.
“Our concern is still great, because the child has not been found in the context of research which is being carried out by both public security and the Angers SRPJ,” he added.
Suicidal episodes
The mother, who had already experienced “a suicidal episode several months ago, also suffers from psychological disorders and must take treatment”.
“In the past, and concerning another child, almost similar events occurred but were followed by a return of the mother and the child at home,” said the prosecutor.
Nathalie Stéphan had been staying for a year in the Angers maternal center, a home for pregnant women and single mothers, where she could continue to regularly welcome her daughter.
At birth, the child was entrusted to Child Welfare (ASE) and placed in a foster family by the children’s judge. “As part of this educational placement she could see her mother during a given time of the week, this week it was 48H00 which was planned with a very free time arrangement,” added the prosecutor, adding that “no incident had not been noted in recent weeks. “
The mother left the home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and should have brought her daughter at 5:30 p.m. to her ESA counselor.
Regarding the 24 hour delay between the non-delivery of the child and the triggering of the alert plan, the deputy of the Attorney General of the Republic of Angers Catherine Vandier explained that “the mother was not a priori dangerous” , having the child “in a completely legal manner”.
“The time that the people who were to recover the child appear, look for them themselves locally the child”, that we “study all the tracks of the environment of the mom, that we physically check all the places where the child is likely to be, all that time goes by and then we decide it’s really worrying, ”explained Catherine Vandier.
” I love you ”
To trigger the plan, “we must ensure that the danger and the removal of the minor child are proven, which is the case,” said Ms. Vandier, adding that as long as “we do not find this child, the ‘concern remains and time is running out’.
During searches carried out in the mother’s apartment, the investigators notably discovered elements “relatively worrying” according to the prosecutor, including a word from the mother saying “I love you”, which “can be interpreted as posing a risk on little Vanilla “.
According to Deputy Prosecutor Carol Dugast, the mother was examined by a doctor “to understand the state of her condition and her psyche.”
“It seems to us rather that it is a mother who is suffering, she never made her daughter suffer,” she added.
“If you locate the child or the suspect, do not intervene yourself, call immediately 197, or send an email to: [email protected]”, specified the alert accompanied by a photo of the child.
