A week of showers is coming in Minho

A group of inhabitants of the parish of Aboim da Nóbrega, in the municipality of Vila Verde, this afternoon recreated an event from the 13th century, when the noble Dom João de Aboim lived in the former Terras da Nóbrega, currently located between Vila Verde and Ponte da Barca.

The group intends to warn of the cultural nature of the parish that had in Dom João de Aboim one of the most important figures over the centuries, having been the Chief Butler of the Kingdom of Portugal between 1264 and 1279.

The knights lent their bodies to recreate Dom João de Aboim and 12 nobles on horseback, at a time when there were no armies and when the nobles called on the people’s pawns to help in the battles.

The tour passed by the house where the nobleman lived, Casa da Pequenina, and there were still plans to go to Castelo da Nóbrega (or Castelo de Aboim, for those on the side of Vila Verde), but they were left out because of the rain.

João Peres de Aboim was born in Aboim da Nóbrega in 1213, the son of Pero Ourigues da Nóbrega, seneschal of D. Sancho II.

He was one of the most important figures in royal politics at the time of D. Afonso III. He was the queen’s butler between 1254 and 1259, becoming chief butler almost until her death.

He was also a lieutenant in Ponte de Lima, in 1259, and a lieutenant in Évora or Alentejo between 1270 and 1284, where he spent the last days of his life.
