A waiter in a gay club “stole” the role of Kája Kroupa from the Oldřich Kaiser. Josef Starek’s fame ultimately cost him his life

To the role of Kája Kroupa in sun, hay, … was originally to be chosen by Oldrich Kaiser. However, Zdeněk Troška finally decided to replace this popular actor with non-actor Josef Starek (†48). He met him as a waiter in a well-known gay club in Prague. Though Starek played only a small supporting role and didn’t get as much space as the others, his eccentric portrayal of Kroupa is unforgettable. To please Oldřich Kaiser after this unexpected change, he occupied it Sun, hay, eroticism as an “Italian mafioso”.

The fact that Kája Kroupa’s sexual orientation is different was already quite evident in the third film, while in Sun hay and a couple of slaps there were hints, but he still liked his planned wedding with Blažena. Word got around and Troška eventually cast him in two more films.

However, Starek didn’t have a great acting career. At the end of his life, he made a living as a vendor at the Prague Zoo. Here, too, people recognized him and liked to take pictures with him, which pleased him. They liked and very often enjoyed exuberant parties filled with alcohol, which most likely affected his health. He didn’t even live to be fifty, because he died of a heart attack at just 48.
