a union calls for the abolition of French in primary school!

Hardly had the decision to adopt, “after an in-depth study carried out by experts and specialists”, the teaching of English at the primary level been taken by the high authorities, than the eternal debate on the abolition of French in the same cycle resurfaces.

A national education union called for “the abolition of French in the primary cycle”, justifying its position by “lightening (the program) of the student”. The Algerian Organization of Teachers of Education (Oape), in this case, pleads, in a press release after the meeting of its National Office, for “French only to be maintained, like all the other languages , Middle and Secondary”.

On June 19, during a meeting of the Council of Ministers, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called on the government to “adopt the English language from the primary cycle”. Only, nothing indicates that it will be for the next school year. Its application will have to be preceded by an “in-depth study carried out by experts and specialists”, according to the terms of the press release of the meeting. A process which, no doubt, will be very long.

English after “extensive study”

But, for the Oape which “welcomes” the decision, it is apparently easy, since it calls on the Ministry of National Education “to adopt the teaching of English from the next school year”.

A question arises: has this union thought about the human and financial resources that the adoption of English in the program would require? Surely not ! Specialists say that to cover the 20,100 primary schools spread across the national territory, about 30,000 teachers are needed, not to mention the budget that will have to be mobilized.

Also, when we call to abolish the teaching of French in primary school, have we thought about the future of the teachers of this language currently in post? Unless these kinds of calls obey purely ideological considerations, logic dictates that any revision must be included in an overall vision of reforming the education system. The real question has always been and remains, according to pedagogues: “which school do we want?”.

The school hostage to ideology?

However, it is clear that the school remains hostage to ideological visions, particularly among the Islamo-conservative current in Algeria (parties and associations), which misses no opportunity to express itself on issues related to the school curriculum.

It is for this reason that the Oape union calls “to remove everything that affects the principles of society from the school book” and above all “to rehabilitate the subjects of national identity, at their head the Islamic sciences”.
