A tough number for Nuremberg – Duisburg meets BVB

Even if not all participants have been determined yet, DFB President Fritz Keller and Deputy Secretary General Heike Ullrich have drawn the first round of the DFB Cup. Especially 1. FC Nürnberg and MSV Duisburg were hit with tough lots. The reigning champion Bayern Munich meanwhile has to go to the Rhineland.

64 teams, 32 games: the balls have been drawn, the first round of the DFB-Pokal 2020/21 has been decided.

“Berlin, Berlin – who is going to Berlin?” 64 teams try again to reach the big DFB Cup final next year. In the coming season, defending champion Bayern Munich, who has already won the pot 20 times, will be hunted down.

It starts as usual with the first round, which was drawn on Sunday evening and, in a familiar manner, brought in Bundesliga teams as opponents from small amateur clubs. The big lot, the reigning winner Bavaria, was drawn by an as yet unknown club from the Rhineland this year. Because: Here in the Landespokal of the Mittelrhein Association, the regional league team Alemannia Aachen and the Middle Rhine league clubs 1. FC Düren, Viktoria Arnoldsweiler and FC Pesch are fighting for the title and the FCB chance.

BVB meanwhile has to go to third division club MSV Duisburg, while 1. FC Nürnberg, which is listed as an “amateur club”, has to take on RB Leipzig, who is also the first ball drawn that evening. A difficult task for the club, which recently averted relegation to the third division in the last second in the relegation against Ingolstadt. And last year’s finalist Bayer Leverkusen must win the Cup of the Hamburg Association.

Fritz Keller is DFB President.

Also interesting: Hoffenheim has an away game in Saxony in the first round of the DFB Cup. At the draw, the Kraichgauer were given a game at the Saxony Cup winner. TSG will meet FC International Leipzig, Chemnitzer FC, FC Eilenburg or 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, all of which are in the semi-finals of the Saxon state cup competition. SC Freiburg, on the other hand, doesn’t have to travel very far. Coach Christian Streich’s team will face either SV Waldhof Mannheim, ASC Neuenheim or FC Nöttingen.

Special possible for Stuttgart

In Saxony-Anhalt, on the other hand, the cup was finally canceled and 1. FC Magdeburg was designated as the DFB Cup participant. From Bayern, which has two starting places, is also in all probability 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 – and would then definitely meet FC Schalke 04. Something well-known could also blossom for VfB Stuttgart: The Swabians could meet third division Hansa Rostock for the third time in a row. The cog must first pass the semi-finals and finals in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Further findings: Hertha has a very high hurdle in front of the chest and has to play away with the second division returnees Eintracht Braunschweig. The specifically determined games on Sunday also include the pairings Dynamo Dresden against Hamburger SV or Würzburger Kickers against Hannover 96 and Karlsruher SC against Union Berlin.

The total of 32 entries resulted from the draw carried out by DFB President Fritz Keller and DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich on Sunday evening on ARD. The first round games will be played between September 11th and 14th.

Numerous pairings could not be determined exactly because, among other things, the state cup winners have not yet been determined. These will not be determined until August 22nd. More than 90 teams still have the chance to qualify for the cup. There were therefore 23 placeholders in the lottery wheel. “That’s why we drew so early so that the amateur clubs can prepare for the hygiene stories. We have to name the stadiums, there are a lot of inconsistencies this year,” said DFB President Keller after Deputy DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich at least was able to draw a few specific games.
