A somewhat special mission for Thomas Pesquet

Sciences | A somewhat special mission for Thomas Pesquet

The 4th year students of the Collège Teilhard de Chardin de Chamalières noted that the French astronaut had not brought back from his last stay in Space any photo of the Chaîne des Puys – Limagne fault. They therefore decided to shoot a video intended for him where they present him this emblematic place of the department registered since 2018 on the UNESCO world heritage list and ask him to take a picture of it from space.

It is a somewhat special mission order that is about to receive Thomas Pesquet, who is preparing his second mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) which will start on April 22.

Helped by their teacher, Fabrice Belot, and an astrophysicist fromUniversity of Cambridge, Nicolas Laporte, the young students concluded that there were no obstacles in the way of observing the Auvergne volcanoes since the International Space Station orbiting 400 km above our heads. They then searched among the many photos taken by Thomas Pesquet, the last French astronaut to visit space from November 2016 to June 2017.

Their conclusion is clear: there is no photo of the Chain of volcanic hills taken from l’ISS. The college students therefore got it into their heads to ask the astronaut to photograph during his next space mission their volcanoes. But not easy to contact an astronaut in full preparation period and training in Germany, on Russia and to United States.

So they decided to go through the social networks, and achieve a video clip two minutes presenting their request and the Chain of volcanic hills, with the help of Puy-de-Dôme Departmental Council and the Auvergne association InfiniSciences.

Their goal is for this video to get to Thomas Pesquet before leaving for the Space station, a way for children to escape during this complicated year.
