a report castigates the management of ENS Lyon

The general inspectorate of education, sport and research had been charged with an investigation within the ENS of Lyon following revelations of sexual assault. A report was published Wednesday, October 27, implicating the management of the establishment.

Twenty-seven: this is the number of “situations of sexual assault” listed in its report by the General Inspectorate of Education, Sport and Research since 2017 at the École normale supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon ). Twenty-six of them were suffered by female students, and nine situations could qualify as rape. According to the commission of inspectors :

“The establishment had not sufficiently understood the problem. “

Management has been made aware of fifteen situations over the years, and has only initiated one disciplinary proceeding.

Jean-François Pinton, the director of the school is accused by several victims of having tried to hush up business by calling for moderation, in particular during a meeting on February 25. This would have worsened the social climate in the school. Camille Borne, CGT employee representative, told Release :

“There is no moderation to be had when it comes to sexual violence. “

At ENS Lyon, attacks “put under the rug”

Yet the ENS has been in turmoil for several years. A global turmoil which denounces the inaction of schools in the face of sexual assault and rape and which target in particular selective schools. A movement that revolved around the hashtag #SciencesPorcs on social networks from February 2021.

Already, at the time, several chilling testimonies about sexual assault at ENS Lyon hit the headlines: stories of rape in an article by Release, the story of a warning system between students to target and avoid aggressors in another of franceinfo. Mediacités has also ensured a follow-up ranging from 2018 To 2021 that pinpoints management’s inaction over the years. You can read Zoé, elected to the school’s studies and student life council (CEVE):

« [Pour ces affaires] We are looking for physical evidence when we know that in this kind of case, there is none. And even when we do, things go under the rug. It’s a joke between elected officials at the ENS, but we have the impression that for a case to be taken seriously, it must be a rape with violence in progress in front of everyone . “

The General Inspectorate of Education, Sport and Research has therefore issued seven recommendations. It notably includes the necessary overhaul of the role of the referent in charge of the “equality and discrimination” mission, which must be more clearly defined. The committee also asks to ensure respect for the provisions which prohibit the consumption of alcohol in the school, its places of catering and of residence.
