A remake of the iconic computer game Mafia is based. A team of 150 people worked on it – ČT24 – Czech Television

The fictional American city of Lost Heaven, 1930s. Taxi driver Tommy Angelo gets involved with the Italian mafia and his life changes from minute to minute. The story, which enchanted not only the Czech world of computer games, returns in a reworked form.

“Of course, from the original game, it is necessary to preserve the atmosphere, the core of the whole game,” said Tomáš Hřebíček, the developer of the Mafia game from the Hangar 13 studio in Brno.

Mafia was created in 2002 by the Czech development team Illusion Softworks. The game was different from the others of the time – more realistic and full of plot twists.

“The story was high quality, it was written very well, it had a good gradation, and when a lot of game details were added, which surprised game developers and journalists, especially in the West, a surprising hit was created from the Czech Republic,” says Games editor-in-chief. .cz Aleš Smutný.

The Mafia has become popular, especially in the United States. Players in the UK or Germany also spent hours at the computer because of it. The first part and its next two sequels celebrated success all over the world. More than 18 million copies have been sold.

“The creators were brave, because they were able to insert various elements into a fairly clear gameplay that is action-packed, such as Formula 1 racing, which at the time was one of the most difficult missions among the gaming community,” Smutný said.

Players will not lose this mission even in the new version of the game. “Now in the game there is an opportunity to set a lighter difficulty, on the other hand there is also the possibility of a classic difficulty, so if you want to worry, you have the opportunity,” remarked the developer of the Mafia game from the Brno studio Hangar 13 Roman Hladík.

The programmers, especially from the Brno studio Hangar 13, re-created the whole city and all its heroes. They left the typical elements, such as funny dialogues and dozens of types of cars. Newly added more action scenes or motorcycles.

“I would almost say that it is strange that, as eighteen years ago, such a game was missing on the market, and it may be a bit missing today, so we hope that it will be liked and that we will meet the needs of players,” Hladík hopes.

The original Mafia also attracted attention with high-quality Czech dubbing, which was unparalleled in the Czech Republic. It was created for the remake by the same actors as in 2002. The players will again hear Marek Vašut, Alexej Pyšek or Petr Rychlý.
