A record at Lusail Stadium… a match which sees the “highest attendance” since the ’94 final

FIFA announced on its Twitter account that the crowd attendance at Lusail Stadium during the match between Argentina and Mexico on Saturday is the highest in the history of the FIFA World Cup since the 1994 final, when 94,194 people attended the match.

According to FIFA data, 88,966 people attended the match at Lusail Stadium.

Interestingly, the 1994 World Cup Final, which FIFA mentioned as witnessing the largest number of fans in the stadium, was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, United States of America on July 17 1994, and the match was between Brazil and Italy.

Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez scored two superb goals as Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 in a tumultuous atmosphere at Lusail Stadium on Saturday to secure their first World Cup victory.

And after their sudden 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening Group C match, the Argentina national team was aware that defeat would knock them out of the tournament, but they started the game poorly and encountered difficulties in ‘facing Mexico’s high pressure, and Messi did not have enough time or space to play comfortably.

The Argentina captain disappeared in the first half, his only contribution coming with a header that went over the bar as his side failed to create real chances.

But he received the ball outside the penalty area from a pass to Angel Di Maria, and Messi did not miss the goal and hit a low ball that went through the defenders’ feet and into the net. Fernandez doubles his lead in the 87th minute with a great shot.

The Argentina national team jumped to second place with three points, one point behind leaders Poland, before facing the two sides at the end of the group stage. Saudi Arabia are third and have three points, tied with Argentina, but are trailing on goal difference.

Messi, the Argentina national team captain, said the team eased the pressure on him after his sudden defeat in their opening Group C match in the FIFA World Cup Finals against Saudi Arabia when they defeated Mexico. Saturday, which will now allow him to face his final group stage match against Poland while at ease.

Messi said: “It is a heavy burden that we have lifted off our shoulders. We feel comfortable that things have returned to our hands again.”

“I think the first half was difficult because of the situation we were in and the need to win,” added Messi. “The goal changed the course of the match.”

He continued: “We had to win, but the game had to be played like this. We had to win so that everyone was calm and could approach Poland’s match differently,” according to Reuters.
