Type 2 diabetes is an insidious threat because symptoms do not usually appear until blood levels have risen steadily.

This is a real problem, because consistently high blood sugar levels can increase the risk of heart disease. According to Russia Today.

However, there are subtle changes that can indicate type 2 diabetes, and some may appear when you wake up in the morning.

Speaking to Express, Dr. Ralph Abraham, a consultant diabetes and lipid and endocrine disorders, explains some of the warning signs.

“The most obvious reason may be a dry mouth,” says Abraham, “but you might suspect something wrong if you’ve already spent the night waking up a lot to urinate and feel thirsty.”

He adds that there are a host of other subtle symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes, which earned him the famous “silent killer” nickname, some of which include nonspecific fatigue, drowsiness, blurred vision, sexual difficulties, poor healing of minor wounds, fungal infections and boils.

When diagnosing the disease, lifestyle changes are usually recommended to lower blood sugar levels.

Diet plays a major role in managing blood sugar, and there is technically nothing you cannot eat.

However, you should limit your carbohydrate intake as it can lead to high blood sugar levels. Things to watch include simple carbohydrates – the sugars that the body quickly breaks down and thus quickly raises blood sugar levels.

Highly refined starches like white bread should be avoided, as they usually lead to spikes in blood sugar levels.
