A piece of New York in Brigittenau

It is actually a very bad time to open a new stage. Nevertheless, Wolfgang Ebner has just done that and on Wednesday evening presented the program in Vindobona (www.vindobona.wien) in Vienna, which he had taken over in the 20th district. Of course, he has considered postponing the whole thing or even calling it off; but in the end he decided to go through with it.

It all started several years ago, not in Brigittenau, but in New York. There the former flight attendant, who not only studied acting, singing and dance, but can also refer to an advertising, marketing and event training and was responsible for the Novomatic Forum in Vienna, visited the restaurant Don’t tell Mama who combines cuisine and entertainment. “Since then, I’ve wanted to do something like that in Vienna too.” When looking for a suitable location for such dinner shows, he finally found what he was looking for on Wallensteinplatz. At the beginning of February he took over the Vindobona – and then came the lockdown.

Variety, cabaret, magic, musicals and children’s shows

It then took until July before he could actually start to convert and refurbish the cellar, which also includes a two-storey restaurant, according to his ideas. After the opening of the gastro area in August, the artistic part has started. The tables for two and four in the elegant red and black hall, whose stage is equipped with a large LED wall, can seat up to 165 people. 280 visitors would be possible without Corona.

Rita Sereinig and Thomas Kahry, the landlord, are the artistic directors. Chef Kimberly van leperen and gastro chef Krisztian Kovacs are responsible for the dishes that change every evening (there are also vegan menus) and the service at the dinner shows.

In its deliberately diverse range, Ebner builds on a colorful mix of in-house productions and guest performances. Every second Wednesday of the month Maya Hakvoort presents “Maya’s Magic Moments” together with befriended musical actors, and in addition to cabaret stars such as Nadja Maleh, Viktor Gernot, Thomas Maurer and Florian Scheuba, there are also singer Angelika Kirchschlager, actress Mavie Hörbiger, magician / ventriloquist Tricky Niki, Drag queen Grazia Patricia or musician Konstantin Wecker already booked. There will also be matinees especially for children, from magic shows to sing-along musicals. Some of the evenings are already sold out. Now the coronavirus just has to play along.
