A photo exhibition about various social groups in Latvia will be opened in the virtual environment

Participate in a photo project Distance Six photographers – Andrejs Strokins, Kristīne Madjare, Reinis Hofmanis, Georgs Avetisjans, Ieva Balode and Iveta Gabaliņa – were invited to conduct photo research on their chosen target groups this summer. Each artist was asked to spend the whole summer with members of the target groups, forming relationships with them and capturing various details of everyday life, recording conversations and making videos that corresponded to the artists’ intention to reveal the characteristics of these societies or individuals. The aim of the project is to explore social groups and discover their human emotional aspects, recognizing that art is the best way to encourage society to break its stereotypes and reduce social exclusion. This is a call for the society to be aware of its peers, to motivate not to turn away, despite the differences, but on the contrary – to increase the desire to communicate, get to know diversity and understand the importance of mutual relations in the formation of modern Latvian society.

Before the research was started, the photographers were consulted by cultural anthropologist and rector of the Latvian Academy of Culture Rūta Muktupāvela, providing an insight into the specifics of field research and an understanding of ethical principles. Katrīna Jaunupe, the curator of the art project, says about the upcoming digital exhibition: “Creating exhibitions Distance concept and a space for virtual exhibition of works of art, the driving force behind my creative activity is the belief that we are all equal. We all want to be loved, recognized and valued. And not on the scale of any external signs or material achievements, but on the level of the heart. And art is one of the most accurate, effective and efficient ways of talking about humanity. In essence, about ourselves and the world we live in and want to live in. “

As of October 22, on the website www.atstatuvums.lv a virtual photo exhibition will be available, which is planned to be realized in physical form next year. On the opening day at 18 fund Art needs space Facebook page A discussion with artists and curators will be broadcast, moderated by cultural anthropologist Rūta Muktupāvela, discussing the project implementation process and outcome.
