A new sport has caught Zdeno Chara’s attention and he has switched to it.

Although the former Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara is now retired, this does not prevent him from finding a new sport.

Indeed, the giant format defender announced this week that he would participate in the prestigious Boston Marathon on April 17 via an Instagram post.

“I am so happy to announce that I am running my very first marathon, and what better first marathon than the Boston Marathon on April 17th! Additionally, I run to support the Thomas E. Smith Foundation and the Hoyt Foundation. Dick and Rick Hoyt had an incredible impact on millions of people around the world and personally helped motivate us for our 2011 Stanley Cup championship. The Hoyt Foundation has an incredible legacy with the BAA and this iconic marathon. Tom Smith is one of the most resilient and inspiring stories. With his passion and dedication, his foundation continually helps those affected and living with paralysis. If you would like to donate to the Hoyt Foundation and the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, please click on the donation link in my bio. Looking forward to seeing you on the course, come and cheer us on! »

Dick Hoyt became a well-known Boston Marathon runner after pushing his son in a wheelchair along the 42.195 km course dozens of times. Hoyt died in September 2021 at the age of 80.

The Thomas E. Smith Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of those affected by and living with paralysis through financial and emotional support, as well as to support preventive innovations that reduce the risk of spinal cord injury.

In 1,680 games played in the National Hockey League, Chara had 209 goals and 471 assists for a total of 680 points.
