a new sludge treatment center to remove silt in the north of the Arcachon basin

Muddy sludge has become very problematic, particularly in the port and in the anchorage area of the municipality of Arès. A new innovative eight-hectare treatment center will be built to recycle the silt.

It is a plague north of the Arcachon basin. The sludge invaded the port of Arès and the Tracasse anchorage area to the point of hindering navigation and making the sector dangerous for boaters and seafarers.

Dredge and store sediment

“Because of the siltation, you have to leave an hour later and return to the port an hour earlier than the tide times. And you sink even with skids, you can sink up to the waist “, explains Xavier Daney, mayor of the town of Arès. It has become urgent to de-silt. But to dredge the silt, you need storage space. The city of Arès has lent a deforested area of 8 hectares in the forest to the SIBA (Syndicat intercommunal du bassin d’Arcachon) to set up a new sediment management unit.

“There will be treatment basins designed to receive the fresh sludge that will come out directly from the dredging site, there will also be sediment storage basins that will have been previously drained and a covered work area to store the dry sediments that will be then employed in recovery channels “, details Adelyne Roland in charge of maritime pole mission at SIBA.
An innovative project where the sediments will be fully treated on the same site for only six months of the year to preserve the environment. “The nesting period of the species from March to September will be left untreated”, according to the project manager.

This new unit will increase the vessel storage capacity by half in the north basin. “There are six other sludge treatment sites in the north basin, we needed a seventh to be exemplary in terms of the environment”, comments Yves Foulon, president of SIBA and mayor of Arcachon.

Cost of the project: 2.5 million euros. Delivery: end of 2021.
