A new “pole” of international avant-garde art for Cuenca

Cuenca, Dec 18 (EFE) .- The deconsecrated church of Santa Cruz in the city of Cuenca, where 107 works by 60 international artists are already on display that show the historical European avant-gardes, aspires to become a resource with the Roberto Polo Collection “Vital” for the capital of Cuenca.

This was highlighted by the mayor of Cuenca, Darío Dolz, at the inauguration this Friday of the second headquarters of the Center for Modern and Contemporary Art of Castilla-La Mancha (CORPO), in which the president of Castilla-La Mancha participated, Emiliano García-Page, together with the Cuban-American collector Roberto Polo, who has donated the works.

An art collection that has been a “wish” for the capital, according to Dolz, in a “magnificent” building, which combines art, light, stone and nature on two floors, where a tour is offered from the middle of the XIX until today, and in which the origin of design in Europe is highlighted.

This new space dedicated to art joins the Antonio Pérez Foundation, Espacio Torner, Casa Zavala and the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in the capital, forming a large circle dedicated to art.

Precisely, the collection wants to establish a parallel between the artists who promoted the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca in 1959 and their European and American contemporaries, as highlighted by the patron Roberto Polo in an emotional intervention before the media.

Next to the Huécar river sickle hang works by painters such as John Atkinson Grimshaw, Fe´licien Rops, Alexandre Se´on, Joseph Granie´ and Edgar Degas.

A work in India ink on paper of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, by Pablo Ruiz Picasso, and “The soldier”, an oil on canvas by the Frenchman Euge`ne Delacroix, attracts attention very close to the entrance to this old church.

The second height, which was occupied by the choir of the old church, offers a sample of contemporary sculpture and photography, which ends in a room dedicated to abstraction.

After its inauguration, the Church of the Holy Cross opens to the general public this Saturday with regular hours from Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

CORPO is an initiative of the Government of this autonomous community, which opened its first headquarters in March 2019 in the old convent of Santa Fe de Toledo.

The inauguration was also attended by the vice president of the Board, Jose´ Luis Marti´nez Guijarro, and the artistic director of CORPO, Rafael Sierra, among others. EFE
