A new beginning for the Karl May Museum – board replaced

Former mayor Volkmar Kunze helps out for a year

Instead, the former Mayor of Radebeul, Volkmar Kunze, is to take over the management temporarily. He apparently took up his honorary position on July 1, replacing René Wagner, who temporarily took over the business after Wacker’s dismissal. According to the information, the curator of the museum, Robin Leipold, will be introduced to the content management of the museum in the coming months.

Female support from Leipzig

Radebeul’s mayor Jörg Müller and the director of the State Ethnographic Collections Léontine Meijer-van Mensch are new to the foundation board. Thomas Grübner wanted to leave the board, but remains in office after the decisions on Saturday.

The decisions of the board of trustees are a partial success for the staff. “Ralf Harder remains in the foundation, in the board of trustees,” it says from there. “We would have preferred it to have left the foundation entirely. But it is a fresh start.”

At the beginning of May, the dismissal of museum director Christian Wacker sparked a debate about the direction and dealings between the foundation and the museum. Wacker accused parts of the foundation of acting backwards and of bullying. In an open letter, he criticized, in addition to a number of other points, an inadequate discussion of critical aspects in the life and work of Karl May. The workforce stood behind Wacker and also called for a comprehensive renewal and a critical discussion with Karl May.

Karl May Foundation
The Karl May Foundation was founded in 1913 by Karl May’s second wife Klara May. In doing so, she complied with May’s will. The foundation sponsors the Karl May Museum and publisher of the series. In addition to the Karl May Publishing House and the Karl May Society, the foundation has been involved in the publication of the historical-critical edition since 2007. The foundation consisted of the board and the board of trustees.
