a mural to pay tribute to the nursing staff

The fresco will be finished in a few days – © RTBF

An impressive fresco is painted under the windows of the Etterbeek-Ixelles hospital, in order to thank the hospital staff for their mobilization during the crisis. It is an initiative of a collective of artists supported by the town and by various sponsors. The fresco is affixed to a wall of an abandoned building of the CPAS.

“I wanted the colors to remind the hospital staff, the smocks! Then not only the doctors or the nurses, but people who clean, make security, that all are represented” explains Amandine Lesay, painter and street artist.

“If it has to be done, I would do it again!”

In the neighborhood, the project appeals to passers-by and affects the nursing staff. Martine worked for 3 months in one of the 2 Covid-19 units of the Etterbeek-Ixelles hospital. This nurse experienced particularly strong moments there: “Despite the age that I have, I appreciated it. I would have been sad not to be able to contribute to it! If it has to be done, I would do it again gladly!”

However, the coronavirus has taken away many colleagues to whom the artists pay tribute! On the facade, balloons in memory of a real release of balloons last week following the death of a nurse. “By chatting with the staff, balloons would be a better way to pay tribute to them, and a little bit of a blow to all the others who were victims of the Covid-19”, continues Amandine Lesay.

These superheroes were applauded every night for many weeks. But they are now exhausted and fear a second wave.

“After 3 months of Covid-19 we are tired!”

“We see people wandering, crowds … Still work, but after 3 months of Covid-19 we are tired! We would like to rest that people pay attention and wear their mask, that would make us even more happy”says another nurse.

The caregivers honored by this gigantic fresco hope that it will remind the general public and the political world of the fundamental role they exercise on a daily basis.
