Caldense cyclist Carlos Quintero (Terengganu) was hit yesterday by a motorcycle when the rider was training in the vicinity of Medellín, so he was disabled for a month, the team reported.

“I was training on the Las Palmas highway in Medellín and a motorcyclist violated a stop sign and ran over me,” said the climber, quoted in a statement.

The runner, who was born 34 years ago in the department of Caldas, explained that “at first I was very scared because my left hand hurt too much, but when the ambulance service and the insurance officers arrived, I could be calmer.”

After medical evaluations Quintero was disabled for a month and he will also have to continue with 10 days of physical therapy to regain mobility of the hand.

The accident left Quintero frustrated but he hopes to recover to face the Asian calendar of which he said “is uncertain.”

“We had planned to restart the season in September, but there is still no clarity with the racing organizations,” he said.

The rutero thanked the team for the support and called for cyclists, drivers, motorcyclists and all other road users to respect each other.

“The message is not only for drivers, but for all road users, be they motorcyclists, cyclists, motorists or pedestrians. The most important thing is to have patience, to know that the other is more vulnerable and that first of all it is a life the that is traveling on the highway. Respect and citizen awareness is the pillar of a good coexistence, “said the athlete.

On July 3, Nairo Quintana (Arkéa-Samsic) suffered multiple injuries to his right knee when he was hit by a driver while training on a highway in the department of Boyacá, for which he was inactive for two weeks.

After his recovery, he returned to training and traveled to Spain on a flight that included 60 other cyclists, including the 2019 Tour de France champion, Egan Bernal (Ineos); Miguel Ángel López, head of the Astana ranks, and Rigoberto Urán, second in the gala round of 2017.

To the accidents of Quintero and Quintana is added that of the juvenile Carlos Andrés Ospina (UAE Team Colombia), hit by a vehicle on the Medellín-Bogotá highway, in events that occurred at the end of last month.

The runner was treated at a hospital where he was released within a few hours because he had minor bruises and scrapes that were not serious.
