‘Akinetic’ refers to the inability to move consciously. Mutism stands for the absence of speech. The condition is uncommon. Presumably less than a hundred people in the Netherlands suffer from akinetic mutism. Not only people with this condition can benefit from the sleeping aid. Patients with aphasia or a presumed consciousness disorder sometimes also benefit from it.
