A man up to the task: how has production shortened Jean Dujardin by 40 cm? – CAMEROON MAGAZINE – CAMEROON INFO

On the occasion of the broadcast of the film Un homme à mesure Saturday August 22, 2020, from 9:05 p.m. on M6, Télé Star reveals what techniques the production of the feature film used to shorten Jean Dujardin to the screen.

Released in theaters in 2016, the film Un homme à mesure, carried by Jean Dujardin and Virginie Efira, will be broadcast on Saturday August 22, 2020, from 9:05 p.m. on M6. In this feature film, the character played by the former host of Nouvelle Starr meets the one played by the Oscar-winning actor for his role in The Artist. The first falls under the spell of the second which has the particularity of measuring only 1m36. Jean Dujardin being much taller in reality, it was therefore necessary that the production use several techniques for the actor to appear as being much smaller than his playing partners on screen.

In fact, many special effects were necessary to give the illusion of a Jean Dujardin shortened by more than 40 cm. Thus, the actor has been digitally shrunk in post-production for the work of proportions, but also directly on the set, in a more artisanal way. “It ranged from things as simple as bringing Jean to his knees (framing him at shoulder level) or forcing perspectives (making him farther away so that he looks smaller) to more complicated methods like this scene in the office where Jean, interrupted by Cedric, had to jump from the chair. For this shot, we had to raise the whole part by 40 cm except the part on which Jean landed ”explained the director Laurent Tirard on this subject.

The shooting of Un homme à mesure was also a delicate experience for Virginie Efira and Jean Dujardin, who had to adapt their game to the constraints imposed by the film. “I am thinking in particular of the green backgrounds to which we are not so used in France or of these full-length scenes where we should not look each other in the eyes. I stared at his shirt button and looked at him at a cloud above my head to address me, ”said Virginie Efira during the promotion of the feature film.

“When we were playing in the street it was absurd: passers-by had to believe that we were doing a contemporary art performance!” the actress continued. Finally, the production hired a man of 1m40 to be Jean Dujardin’s understudy during all the back scenes. The latter was present every day on the set of the film, and was thus able to share his enlightened experience on the situations of A Man at the Height.
