A lot of nuisance from speed cameras in Tilburg street: ‘All day long’

Delivery people who drive their fast e-bikes to and fro and who stand on the street chatting and smoking. Restocking trucks with the engine running. The delivery men of flash delivery company Flink have significantly changed the atmosphere in the Korte Tuinstraat in Tilburg’s city center. Where it used to be relatively quiet living, there has been a lot of nuisance since the arrival of flash delivery. The municipality now wants to do something about it, but that is not easy.

Those who want to order a quick message in the evening, without having to leave the house, can now go to so-called flash deliverers. They promise that the groceries will be delivered within ten minutes. But that has a downside.

Marieke is one of the residents of the Korte Tuinstraat in the center of Tilburg. She lives right across from the speed camera’s location. And that, according to Marieke, causes a lot of nuisance. “The enjoyment of living has been considerably affected. The deliverers are there from eight o’clock in the morning and it goes on until twelve o’clock at night.”

Marieke thinks that such a flash delivery company does not really belong in a residential area. But the problem is that flash delivery has many customers in the inner city. The mostly young customers order their messages online, especially in the evening.

The result is bustle in the street. Delivery workers on a break are talking and smoking in the street. And there are trucks that come to supply with the engine running.

Enforcement
Marjet Pals of the List Smolders Tilburg asked questions about the nuisance in the city council on Monday. “We want enforcement to pay attention to bicycles on the street. Loading and unloading might also be possible at other times. The mayor has said that moving Flink cannot be arranged one, two, three, but the municipality is conversation with the company.”

According to Marjet Pals, the Korte Tuinstraat must remain liveable and that is now at stake: “It is a narrow residential street, there is nuisance and dangerous traffic situations.”

Nuisance in several cities
List Smolders also wants the municipality of Tilburg to talk to other municipalities where nuisance is also experienced. Groningen, Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven are already in consultation about tackling nuisance caused by speed camera drivers.
