Contemplating the Creation

P. Angel Hawthorn Garcia

1.- There was a lady named Catalina, who called her children and told them: boys, the rains came, thank God. I think there are already mushrooms in the field. Take a bag and look for something either on the plain or among the trees to see what God helps us. Yes, mom, we will gladly go because we like mushrooms a lot. They went and among the trees they discovered quite a few of different colors. They picked and cut the best. In a while they returned home and shouted: Mom, look what we brought. Mushrooms are beautiful. They were of various sizes and colors. We’ve brought the biggest and brightest. The mother saw the mushrooms and became discouraged. She said: How clumsy are you, my children! Those mushrooms are useless. They are bright and large, but poisonous. At first glance they are pretty, but whoever eats them will die. The best are the plain ones, the little nails, the tecomates, the blue ones and the ears. They are smaller and less shiny, but edible.

2.- SO IN LIFE.- The same happens with the things of this world. There are modest virtues, such as patience, honesty, and responsibility. They seem hidden things, they do not shine, nor are they the admiration of fools, but they are virtues loved by God and valued by prudent people.

3.- THE CARE OF THE COMMON HOUSE.- The Bible opens its pages with this phrase: “God created heaven and earth” and adds in Exodus 3, 17: “A land flowing with milk and honey”. It is an exuberant planet of beauty and vitality, but man behaves as a selfish and destructive being. The Bible closes its pages with the Apocalypse, where it speaks of an establishment of “The new heavens and the new earth”.

4.- THE ECLIPSES.- In ancient times, people thought that they were omens of great evils, because without light, it was supposed that a punishment from the divinity would come. We now know from science that eclipses are a natural thing. They are phenomena of celestial mechanics, since the stars are in continuous movement and their speeds are different. A clear example is in the hands of a clock. They pass one over the other and do not collide with each other. Saint Paul says: “What an abyss of riches is the wisdom and knowledge of God! He is the origin, path and end of everything. To him be the glory forever. Amen”. (Rom 11, 33-36)
