a life dedicated to “defending the interests of the people”

He passed away on Saturday Ignacio Vergara Ivisona well-known lawyer from Jerez who between 2003 and 2010 headed the Jerez Bar Association.

Born in Jerez in 1947, he was a lover of reading and navigation, as he pointed out in an interview in Diario de Jerez in September 2010, months before he ceased to be in charge of the legal institution. His office was located on Gravina Street.

Specialized in branch of commercial law, studied Law in Seville, a degree that he concluded in 1973. The following year, he began to practice in his hometown, becoming one of the best known and most recognized lawyers in the city. He said that he chose the legal profession “for the pleasure of defending the interests of people and the work of mediation, which is the most important task of a lawyer.”

During his time at the head of the Bar Association, work that took place between 2003 and 2010, he created the Forum Astense Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping members and involved in social and cultural activities in the city, as well as training and communication activities to promote interaction between the Bar Association and Jerez society. His management also made important advances in the computerization of the institution, the involvement of the members and in the consolidation of the Forum Astense collegiate magazine.

Before being in charge of this institution, which he liked to point out was the “oldest in Spainheld other positions in the governing board such as secretary during the mandates of Ignacio Morales —whom he claimed was his “friend, teacher and referent”— and Manuel Barcas and the position of first deputy (vice dean) in the last Morales mandate.

In 2005, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Raymond of Peñafort granted by the Ministry of Justice.

The municipal government has expressed its condolences for the death of Vergara Ivison. The executive wanted to convey his affection “to this outstanding person in the city.” The Popular Party has also conveyed its condolences, highlighting Vergara’s “impulse” that he gave to the Bar Association” and “its greater inclusion” in the city’s social life.

Ignacio Vergara Ivison was married to Ana Maria Sánchez-Briñas and had three children. The mass for his eternal rest was celebrated this Sunday afternoon at the Jerez Funeral Home (in the southern area).
