As he told the Georgian service Radio Svoboda one of the artist’s friends, Datuna, died on May 24 in a Boston clinic. He had lung cancer, the artist struggled with this disease for several years.
In addition to his works, huge lens installations, he became famous for the fact that in 2019 at the Miami Biennale he ate a banana by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, glued to the wall with silver tape and estimated at $ 120 thousand, it was the art installation “Comedian”.
“I ate it to show how little common sense is left in the world if a banana sells for $120,000,” Datuna said at the time.

He was not arrested, but became famous as the “Hungry Artist” and received an offer from the famous banana company Dole to create a series of NFT paintings to raise awareness of hunger and food security. Money from sales of paintings went to charity.
In his paintings, he used glass lenses, because of which the image seems alive. In particular, with the help of this technology, a series of paintings “Flags” was created, reported on the artist’s website.
