“A fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is not recommended”

Yesterday, Wednesday, the set of Antena 3 Noticia hosted the fourth installment of the digital debate ‘Do we talk about it?’ that on this occasion was focused on the certainties and hoaxes about the coronavirus pandemic. For this, he had the opinion of the immunologist Alfredo Correll and the researcher José Antonio López.

The conversation naturally dealt with the topic of vaccination against COVID-19. Specifically, the issue of booster doses, when there are already countries -such as Israel- that have begun to administer it. In this point, Alfredo Correll pointed out that “A generalized fourth dose is not recommended.”

That fourth reinforcement puncture is necessary, today, for “immunocompromised” people. That is to say, “extremely old people, who suffer from tumors, who have received transplants or are immunocompromised.”

Selective and personalized vaccination

That, he maintains, is what the European Medicines Agency (EMA). “The question now is whether we are already in a position to apply a selective and personalized vaccination to see who needs the booster dose and who does not, which is what I would do.”

“Neither the EMA nor the WHO recommend a generalized fourth dose.” A position to which, on the other hand, More and more experts join. “The WHO, in fact, said that the third dose was a kind of luxury of the first world considering that a large part of the planet has not received the first vaccine.”

The third dose in the general population, in any case, would not be dangerous, interjects the researcher José Antonio López; “But it is true that the pandemic is global and new variants can always emerge, taking into account that the world population, as a whole, is undervaccinated.”

“There are more people in the world with the third dose than with the first,” he denounces, while recalling that vaccines must continue to be updated to new variants.
