It is almost half past midnight in the night from Saturday to Sunday when the first distress call rings out at the Aube departmental fire and rescue center. A young woman alerted to a fire in the courtyard of a house at 1 rue Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in Saint-André-les-Vergers.
According to the first pieces of information sent to the operator of the alert processing center, it would be a scooter that caught fire. “We have committed the resources in an appropriate manner” Captain Dolon advances. “While the person was still on the phone, a first Sainte-Savine device reached the scene of the fire. “ When the first firefighters arrive on site, they quickly understand the gravity of the situation.
“We shouted to alert the tenants of the adjoining house so that they get out as quickly as possible”
A rise in power is immediately orchestrated to overcome the flames which progress and threaten the terraced house. “It was impressive, very frightening to see the flames advancing with such speed in the middle of the night”, testifies Laïla. “When my father woke me up, we couldn’t see the neighbors who had already gone out and had taken refuge on the other side, in the garden. So we shouted to alert the tenants of the adjoining house to get out as quickly as possible. It all happened very quickly, we didn’t lose our temper but in retrospect we were all very scared. “
A few seconds and everyone is safe from the flames. Women but also young children. “It’s true that we found the time long before the firefighters arrived. We saw the flames pass from one house to another. Then we moved the cars and the tenants were taken care of. “
“We couldn’t have done anything”
At the height of the intervention, around fifteen firefighters fought to overcome the fire. Twelve people were thus relocated with their families or by the care of the municipality. In the early morning, the condition of the two houses ravaged by the flames testify to the violence of the fire. “We couldn’t have done anything, we watched the progression of the flames without being able to intervene. It is really very sad for those who have really lost everything in this drama. There is nothing left, it’s sad ”, regrets Laïla.
“According to a neighbor, someone could have thrown something in the direction of the house. Police officials came to question us, but so far we don’t know more. “ An investigation is already underway in order to identify the circumstances of the incident.
