A Czech woman is facing imprisonment in Austria for the death of her six-year-old son during an alpine hike

According to the Krone Zeitung, the woman, who comes from Prague, was on a hike on Mount Drachenwand in February with her son, partner and family friend. According to the police, on the morning of February 22, the group set out on a secured journey (the so-called viu ferrata) to the top of the mountain, where they did not reach until late in the afternoon.

On the way from the top, the boy slipped in the dark and fell to a depth of 60 to 70 meters. When the rescue team got to him, he could no longer revive the child. Deployment of the helicopter was not possible in difficult terrain.

The child in the ferrata had nothing to do

According to the then rescue chief, the mother and her partner had completed the tour several times before, but they had the child with them for the first time. Ferrata Drachenwand has a difficulty classification of C / D, which means higher difficulty with very difficult passages. It is intended for adult tourists.

The group did not reach the top of the Drachenwand mountain by ferrata until 7 o’clock, around five o’clock in the afternoon. It was too late, experts say. “It’s too late for this time of year, it’s getting dark. And when you start the descent, it’s suddenly dark, “said Heinz Hemetsberger of the Mondeseeland mountain rescue service.

The public prosecutor justified the accusation, inter alia, by the fact that the child was not sufficiently secured throughout the tour. According to him, the mother did not have a child on such a difficult route at all.
