a “citizen dialogue” at the house of Rhineland-Palatinate in Dijon

On May 9, 2021, the conference on the future of Europe launched citizens’ debates on the future of Europe, giving the floor to European citizens At the house of Rhineland-Palatinate in Dijon on October 16 and 17 , French and Germans debated the future of the EU.

The overarching objective of the Conference on the Future of Europe, launched by the European institutions on May 9, 2021, is to encourage European citizens and facilitate their involvement in democracy beyond mere participation in the European elections.

A Franco-German citizen dialogue

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Rhineland-Palatinate wanted mark their 60-year partnership and participate in this Conference on the Future of Europe by jointly organizing a Franco-German Citizen Dialogue. This is offered by:

  • the information centers on the European Union in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (Maison de l’Europe) and in Rhineland-Palatinate (City of Kaiserslautern)
  • the House of Rhineland-Palatinate in Dijon,
  • the Maison de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in Mainz,
  • le Partnerschaftsverband Rheinland-Pfalz / 4-er Netzwerk (Fédération des jumelages et partenariats)

with the financial support of the Bürgerfonds / Franco-German Citizen’s Fund, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region, the Parliament (Landtag) of the State Chancellery (Staatskanzlei) of Rhineland-Palatinate.

This Franco-German Citizen Dialogue was selected from among 22 European projects by the Committee of the Regions and the Bertelsmann Foundation as a pilot project for transnational European citizen dialogue.

A panel of 40 French and German citizens

French and German citizens, volunteers, aged 18 to 78, from the 8 departments of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the partner land, met on October 16 and 17 in Dijon. Another meeting is scheduled for November 27-28 in Mainz (Germany).

Together, they debated, exchanged and compared their opinions and ideas for the future of the European Union. Their citizen opinion, the fruit of their discussions, will be adopted in November in Mainz and will contribute to the platform of the Conference on the Future of Europe, which should end during the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union in June 2022.

The project methodology was developed by the EU information and resource centers of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (Besançon, Dijon) and Rhineland-Palatinate (Kaiserslautern).

This initiative complements the Citizens’ Consultations on Europe organized by the Regional Council in 2018, in a transnational framework.
