A big farewell for Flemish newsreader Martine Tanghe

The regular broadcast was followed by an extensive tribute to the woman who started at the VRT 42 years ago. A whole series of well-known Flemish people came into the picture to thank her, including program maker Paul Jambers, former cyclist Eddy Merckx and Jan Vertonghen, football player for the Red Devils. Former EU president Herman Van Rompuy recited a haiku.

The entire broadcast was broadcast live on the Facebook page Belgian royal family. Because of the farewell she was allowed to visit Filip of Belgium. “I’ve taken it as a sign of recognition,” she said. “And that is a lot of fun.”

It is therefore not the first in Belgium to retire. Colleagues from inside and outside the VRT are short of words to describe Tanghe’s talents. “We’re going to miss her, the leading lady from The news, from great lady of the news service, the power behind the throne of the VRT, “says co-presenter Xavier Taveirne.

Mayor De Wever of Antwerp took the opportunity in the regular broadcast by addressing her live. “Her retirement is the end of an era and Flanders will miss her terribly,” he said.
