A bad decision for speeders

The speed limit on highways is off the table. So the Federal Council decided today. Even opponents of the speed limit should make this result very thoughtful.

So it remains: Germany will not get a general speed limit on highways. A corresponding advance by the states of Berlin and Bremen was slowed down by the Federal Council today.

No matter whether you are at home in the fast lane or not – this decision is bad for all of us. Because it sidelines what belongs in the center: the common good.

And therefore it can hardly be reasonably justified.

That most accident victims die on country roads, as opponents of the speed limit say? That it’s not the climate crisis would solve? And that we often do not progress faster anyway? Everything is right.

Most Germans want a speed limit

And yet: A survey shows that more than two thirds of Germans are in favor of a speed limit. Everyone may have personal reasons for this. Some people know that this means that traffic flows better and that we all arrive faster. Others care about the environment, which would be relieved. This is because fewer poisons are emitted at lower speeds. That doesn’t save the climate, but it is good for our health. And still others say that this would make our motorways even safer – the number of serious and fatal accidents would be halved.

You are all right. And they all recognized what an important study had already summed up in 2007: A speed limit of 130 km / h would benefit the general public.

The majority in Federal Council didn’t recognize that. With today’s decision, it places the interests of fewer racers above the benefits for the general public.

And that should make even the opponents of a speed limit think.
